The Tourism Industry in Vietnam has the responsibility to care for the country’s natural and built environment in a way that will ensure their long term viability and well being. This page offers ways in which the traveler can play a part in helping to protect Vietnam from the negative impacts of Tourism.
Protecting Biodiversity
To help avoid environmental disasters please do not:
ü Buy products that exploit wildlife or aid the destruction of species and habitats.
ü Refrain from ordering wild meat dishes in restaurants and buy only honey that is farmed, no taken directly from the forests by hunters.
ü Avoid purchasing animal products such as elephant ivory, tortoiseshell, wild animal skins and traditional medicines made from animal parts.
Coral and Caves
To help the preservation of Vietnam’s marine life, coral and caves it is recommended that you:
ü Do not buy coral as many reefs are now depleted by destructive harvesting practices brought on by tourist demand.
ü When visiting coral reefs do not touch live coral, as this hinders growth – some species, such as ‘fire corals’ are also able to cause a harmful sting.
ü Do not anchor boats on coral reefs. If your Tour Operator does this, try to convince him or her to anchor in a sandy area. Indicate that you are willing to swim the extra distance to the coral.
Trekking and biking
The constant flow of tourists in trekking areas can have a negative impact on the fragile ecological balance of these places. Help by keeping to designates trails when out walking or riding, both for your safety and the protection of the environment.
Plastic Bottles, Plastic bags
Rubbish should be properly disposed of. There are few public rubbish bins in Vietnam, so this may mean carrying it with you for a while. Take your plastic bags and bottles with you especially when trekking or visiting hill tribe villages. Do not dispose of garbage or cigarettes in the wild as they take hundreds of years to biodegrade, even biodegradable material should be carried out as it is slow to breakdown in mountain environments. It may upset the ecology of the area visited and spread diseases to animals.
Sustaining Communities
Buying locally made crafts and supporting local skills, goods and services is a great way of boosting local income. Bargaining in Vietnam is the accepted and expected custom and bargaining with a smile enhances the relation between buyer and seller and may make the experience more enjoyable.
Energy Awareness
Remember to turn off your air conditioner, fans, light and other electrical appliances when you leave your hotel or guesthouse. Try to reduce the use of air – conditioners in cars and encourage drivers to turn off the engine when stationary.
